I believe Common to be the best learning experience "Bang for the Buck" out there. It does however require some disipline. There are so many sessions to choose from. There is so much advice from "new found peers." If you map out your path, get into the University (do they still have that?) and stick with the program you will probably benefit greatly from your attendance. The Tech conference from my experience is more focused on a path. It is also more focused on IBM (my preferred vendor even if they can't market the 400/iseries). The quality of presenters is usually good at both but you get primarily IBM presentations at the Tech Conf. That being said, the go with the flow method at Common also offers advantages of hearing new stuff and networking with those on the bleeding edge. It just depends on your perspective and how willing you are to meet people and discuss your (opinions, ignorance, knowledge, etc.). Is this a once in a lifetime or will regular attendance be an option? If you believe you will be able to go back with some regularity pick Common. The networking and building of knowledge is priceless. Also if you can go back, make sure you volunteer for something. Resolutions, session chair, registration worker... anything to get more involved.
