Geez, Bob, if DSPOBJD QCMD took 10 minutes, I'd hate to see the response time
you get from some of the other commands!

Since any AS/400 manuals you might be able to get your hands on now will
probably be _WAY_ past v2r1, my thinking is that you're going to run into a
lot of functions (new commands, as well as commands with added functionality)
that were added to OS/400 after v2r1. Well, the good stuff we all drooled
over when they came out <vbg>.

Someone else mentioned using the GO VERB and GO SUBJECT commands. If you see
a command referenced in a manual, you can always type the name on a command
line and press the F4 function key to prompt the command to see if it exists
on v2r1.

By coincidence, this past weekend, I was cleaning out some old stuff in my
basement and ran across the IBM Softcopy CD-ROM for v2r3. (In case you're not
aware, the Softcopy CD-ROM contains almost all of the IBM manuals for a given
OS/400 release.) I have no use for it anymore, and it might give you more
"current" information for your release than any thing you might be able to buy
today. Email me privately at D.Bale@Handleman.com if you're interested.

Thanks for the information. I successfully used PWRDWNSYS.
Also, DSPOBJD (which ran for about 10 mins. -- I thought it was broke!)
indicates that the system is at level 2.1.

I ordered some AS/400 manuals from Amazon.com; will these newer manuals be
of any help with such an old operating system? Will some things work as
documented (will ANY?).

Next question: how do I display what disks are on the system, their volume
IDs, and what libraries they have on them? Remember, I'm coming from a Wang
minicomputer, which resembles the AS/400 in many ways, but has a much more
user friendly interface: you just press "manage disks", then pick the
volume you want, then the library from that volume.

Thanks,

Bob Sitko
