On the AS/400 the commands follow a simple pattern. Either verb-noun or
verb-adjective-noun. For example WRKDSKSTS. There are a multitude of ways
to learn the commands. Try typing in the following WRKDSK* and pressing
enter. This should give you a list of all commands beginning with WRKDSK.
In case this is not supported on your version of OS, then prompt for the
command SLTCMD for select command. If you like menus you could try one of
the following:
GO MAIN and try to chase it down from there. Another popular option is to
GO CMD### where ### is the noun or adjective you want to work with. For
example GO CMDDSK.

For the real brave there is STRSST. Be careful messing around in there.

Thanks for the information. I successfully used PWRDWNSYS.
Also, DSPOBJD (which ran for about 10 mins. -- I thought it was broke!)
indicates that the system is at level 2.1.

I ordered some AS/400 manuals from Amazon.com; will these newer manuals be
of any help with such an old operating system? Will some things work as
documented (will ANY?).

Next question: how do I display what disks are on the system, their volume
IDs, and what libraries they have on them? Remember, I'm coming from a
Wang
minicomputer, which resembles the AS/400 in many ways, but has a much more
user friendly interface: you just press "manage disks", then pick the
volume you want, then the library from that volume.

Thanks,

Bob Sitko
