Any server on the Internet can be the target of a Denial of Service attack. The idea is to overwhelm the server with new connections and/or requests. Attackers don't try to penetrate the security of the server. So, although security on the AS/400 is great, that's not the issue. Some firewalls can be configured to try to detect attacks. They look for excessive packets coming from a single source. They can filter the packets before they get to the server. In the Yahoo attack, the news was saying packets were coming from multiple sources.
