Thanks for your response. After reading your response and accessing the web pages, I still am unclear. I've read several times that I will get the password prompt. However, I cannot find what the password prompt does after a password is entered, if anything. Does the revised password ever get to the AS/400? Please help me clarify this. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 4 Nov 1999 16:00:59 -0500 From: "Roger Pence" <rp@rogerpence.com> Subject: Re: NetServer: Accessing files with unmatched passwords Diana-- You've correctly described the situation for Win98. For Win9x, the user IDs must match, but the passwords don't. If the user IDs don't match, you won't get in. If the passwords don't match, you can't avoid the password prompt. For WinNT, both the user IDs and passwords can vary. NT prompts for both passwords and user IDs. There is an escape hatch with NetServer's guest profile, but using that pretty much relegates security useless. The www.as400.ibm.com/netserver explains this all pretty clearly. Note too that there is a (very) new NetServer redpiece at http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpieces/abstracts/sg245196.html. rp Diana Hicks Town of Jupiter dianah@jupiter.fl.us +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
