The City in the Thatcher's Britain was a special case where the salaries, the bonuses and the hours were often all absurdly high, but no-one pretended to have any loyalty to anyone. Disgruntlement may arise through the company's fault or the employee's or a mixture of both. Human nature being what it is, it is inevitable that it will happen from time to time, no matter how well the company attempts to behave. A company that goes out of its way to be protective may be resented as paternal. In most cases the real issue for a company is not the threat of malicious behaviour, but the conflict of interest for an employee who is probably off to work for a competitor or himself/herself. As Nina points out they're not always 100% honest about where they're headed.
