The AS/400 also ships with TCP/IP connectivity allowing clients to attach using a TN5250 or TN5250E emulator over any TCP/IP connection, including the internet. TN5250 provides and excellent display emulation that is essentially identical to using a terminal. Several of the 5250 emulation products can be distributed, configured, and launched from a web link, but reside on the remote PC as a windows program and provide true green screen emulation. JAVA and Active-X emulation products also exist but may have platform or performance limitations. TN5250E, which several vendors are shipping (the standard is in draft form with the IETF) allows printing to a 3812 or 5553 printer, user authentication, DES Encryption, and device creation over the TN connection.
