hm..  i haven't used the asc controller very much, but i think it's to 
communicate with ascii type devices.  i think client access has an ascii 
controller option, but i've never used it.

a 170 comes with an ethernet or token ring board.  you could get a hub, and a 
remote access server.  using the ras, it's easy to call in remotely using a 
tcp/ip connection.  and it's almost as fast as being there.

 My questions are:

i think slip.  i don't think ppp came until later

i think so, but haven't tried it.

i got information from reading the trade magazines, searching the web, and 
trial and error.  i found out about the 8235 remote access solution from an ibm 
book called the 30 minute networking guide.  and then last summer they withdrew 
the product (growl)  but you can get the shiva equvliant in a 2, 4 port with 
external modems, or an 8 port with internal modems.  or there's a perle 833, 
which i know nothing about.
