Good grief! I didn't realise there were still any left.

The 2 operating systems are so similar I wouldn't have thought there was
much need for separate education on them. In another reply Vern Hamberg
pointed out most of what he needs to know on S/38 in about 3 sentences.
The standard command key assignments are another difference and can be a
real pain when you're trying to work with both systems at the same time.

The AS/400 is a _big_ system now, and there's never enough time to study
everything you want to just on that. These days we have to trot fairly
briskly just to stand still, and the pace is increasing. Why waste time
cramming his head with stuff that he'll never need again and that may
even confuse him? It's not as if he's going to be developing stuff on
the S/38; they're converting _from_ it. It's the new box that will
reward study, not the old one.

The best advice for him is just to get stuck in to the S/38 code. If
there's anything that doesn't make sense, ask the people at the site
who've been working with the stuff for years. Or bring specific
questions to midrange-l where we love to show off our grey hairs. :-)

I wish him luck with his new career,
