You got that right Joe, we're not living in a capitalist society anymore. where living in a corporate plutocracy.
Shadrach was right that America was built on competition. But it was competition between competing companies in an economy within closed borders. Even when we opened the borders to trade outside the country there were tariffs in place to level the playing field.
Americans have always had to compete against others who had similar standards of living and economic standards and quality standards that they had to maintain. In this kind of economy the company that builds a better mousetrap gets a bigger marketshare and they prosper. Those who are lazy and don't progress fall behind.
That's not the issue we have to deal with when we open the economy outside of our borders.
When people live in a country with no building standards, housing is a fraction of our cost.
When people live in a country with no health standards, their healthcare costs are less.
When people live in a country with no quality controls, the cost of manufacture drops.
But, their buildings fall with moderate earthquakes and kill thousands. Their lifespan is less. The lead in their paint, and polluted water and air, and defective products kill and maim.
We are recently becoming aware of the lower manufacturing standards of products coming in from China.

These things all result in a lower cost of living in third world countries. We have elevated our standards of living, and consequently our cost of living. In order for us to compete against third world countries we will have to lower our living standards to that of the bangladeshi or shanghai worker. "Man up and live like a Bangladeshi". Do we really want to live like that?

Let's face it the idea of capitalism has run it's course it only worked
when other people were unaware they were being taken advantage of.

Drink that in. Don't have to answer all at once.

LOL!

And on THAT note, it's definitely time to go. If you're suggesting that
some other economic system other than enlightened self-interest (the bulwark
of Adam Smith's pre-capitalist philosophies) is going to do better, then I
gotta scoot.

Socialism, perhaps?

No, the problem is with capitalism is not capitalism itself, but
multi-national corporatocracy and the 90-day stock market cycle which
undercuts the fabric of competition. Just as the problem with democracy is
not democracy itself, but instead the power of corporate lobbying which
we've seen so blatantly exposed in the last year or so with the attempted
passage of so many amnesty bills despite the clear disapproval of 80% of the
country.

Anyway, gotta run - it's getting political in here <grin>.
