To All,

My comments for what they are worth:

I find it interesting that a number of you have raised exactly the same
concerns I had -- licensing issues, legal issues, and support. I also
expect IBM to create a HIPER PTF to stop this. I would also expect them to
issue a cease and desist notice to the marketing company. Why? Because the
tool allows a customer to access system resources they haven't paid for. I
know many of you do not agree with that point of view but that's the
reality. A customer buys an AS/400 rated at a certain capacity. Just
because the hardware is capable of more doesn't mean you have the right to
use all the power. I don't agree with IBM's approach regarding interactive
feature pricing but that doesn't give me the right to illegaly access the
extra potential.

There is one concern that hasn't yet been raised. If you do choose to
install this tool and it releases the full potential of the server system
what happens then? Your jobs complete quicker, users experience faster
response times, and you start adding more jobs or more complex tasks because
you now have extra power to use, and then the tool stops working (OS
upgrade, PTF application, etc). What do you do? Your system will still run
but now it is not correctly sized for the work load. Your users complain
about response, jobs take longer to run, much of the work load may never
complete. The continued operation of your business is at risk. Who is
repsonsible? Even if the supplier refunds your purchase price does that
help your immediate predicament? Your only course of action to alleviate
what could be serious performance problems is to upgrade your system as fast
as possible. The funds for the upgrade have not been budgeted much less
allocated, you need the upgrade NOW not next week, next month, whenever IBM
can supply. Some serious explaining to the board is probably in order.

I think any IT manager who actually installs this on a production system
without IBMs blessing is about to embark on a naked slide down a 40 foot
razor blade.

Regards,
Simon Coulter.
