Joan (and everyone else): We had identified MAPICS XA as the ERP system we wanted before MAPICS bought Frontstep (Syteline). We are currently running version 4 of Syteline on a Windows NT4 server on top of a Progress version 8 database. We have significant issues with Syteline and XA has a lot more depth and breadth of functionality than Syteline does. We also had a long series of TERRIBLE experiences with our Syteline affiliate and from the start DKM, the MAPICS affiliate we work with, has been about as great a bunch of people to work with as you could ask for. Admittedly, we have no AS/400 expertise and can't see devoting much time to learning anything more than the basics required to get MAPICS up and running until after we go live. Then we'll see about more in depth training and maybe some certifications for one or two of our people. If you are currently on a RISC6000 or other UNIX box (Syteline, right?) and you don't have much AS/400 experience, this will mean some "late nights" for someone until you get up-to-speed on the iSeries OS. Interesting that a Syteline customer is going to MAPICS XA (or whatever they are calling it now). When MAPICS purchased Syteline, our corporate CFO got all excited that we might get new applications or functions from the Syteline offering that XA doesn't have. Guess the grass always looks greener on the other side, eh? But it never is... We are starting out with 20 floating licenses and are wondering what methods other companies use to free up licenses after, say, ten minutes. Our current ERP system (Syteline 4) does not have this and we have to manually kick people out. Of course, we still want the users jobs to continue - we're just trying to prevent someone from logging in and then leaving their workstation for an extended amount of time and tying up a license someone else needs.
