Ask MAPICS what company do they know off these days where people only work 8-4. Gregory A. Garner Garner Data Systems, Inc. We're skating the user limit right at the moment (actually going over if QSECOFR has to do some work as well as me!), but I can't justify additional seats of EVERY MODULE we are running. At Rel 4, we just released the seats every day, but at Rel 6, it gets a bit more tricky to do that. We could try setting up workstation logins instead, but management wants to see individual responsibility. (In fact, we recently fired a second shift employee because we could prove that his TA records were altered at a given workstation at a certain time of day, even though PMC TRDATA doesn't store the user ID anywhere! I was grilled in the third degree about why MAPICS doesn't trace who creates or updates payroll-sensitive data like TA in and out.) What really galls me about the "user-based" licenses is the statement, "If you have 10 users on first shift and 10 users on second shift, you need 20 licenses." Why? I don't have 20 PC's for them - I have 10. MAPICS is telling us that we can only use a given license 8 hours a day!!! Is this highway robbery, or what? I hope Bill Gates isn't listening! I'm heading out the door before I do any more damage today! -- Joan Joan McCready, IS Manager phone: 636-479-4499 MetalTek International fax: 636-479-3399 The Carondelet Division www.metaltekint.com 8600 Commercial Blvd Pevely, MO 63070 -----Original Message----- From: Shrader, Patrick [mailto:pshrader@wkep.com] Sent: Wednesday, February 13, 2002 4:10 PM To: mapics-l@midrange.com Subject: RE: AS400 Performance The problem with user-based applications is when you need to purchase additional seats. If you are running close to your user limit, you don't encourage additional users to come onboard. If you need one additional AP clerk, you have to buy additional seats for all the applications in your organization (COM, AR, GL, IFM, COM_Net, PCC, etc.). Because of this I have not installed applications that I have on the shelf. Adding 10-20 users to the system for PM&C or PC&C becomes extremely expensive, so I work on ways not to use these modules. I don't mind paying for what I use, but paying for COM seats when I am adding a payroll clerk is indeed a very expensive upgrade charge! Especially if you move up to Browser, and need the additional horsepower - you REALLY get whacked then. We converted to user-based pricing when we implemented Browser. It was a pretty stiff one-time charge, but will definitely pay for itself over time. That was my last upgrade charge! Dale Gindlesperger Fleetwood Folding Trailers, Inc.
