Patrick,

You are absolutely correct. What we did was be very generous on the
initial count, which meant I actually had almost enough after 6 months! :)

What we had to do was write a couple common inquiry programs (stock
location/quantity, allocations, MODATA issues vs receipts, etc) on our own
(sort of like the MAPICS programs but simpler), and create specific common
user IDs for the plant floor for inquiry only users (we have about 30 or
40 of them). That saved a lot of money!

The problem with user-based applications is when you need to purchase
additional seats. If you are running close to your user limit, you don't
encourage additional users to come onboard. If you need one additional AP
clerk, you have to buy additional seats for all the applications in your
organization (COM, AR, GL, IFM, COM_Net, PCC, etc.).

Because of this I have not installed applications that I have on the
shelf.
Adding 10-20 users to the system for PM&C or PC&C becomes extremely
expensive, so I work on ways not to use these modules. I don't mind paying
for what I use, but paying for COM seats when I am adding a payroll clerk
is
indeed a very expensive upgrade charge!

I agree - the upgrade pricing when you are just upgrading to add
horsepower,
with no additional users or applications is too much. Especially if you
move
up to Browser, and need the additional horsepower - you REALLY get whacked
then.

We converted to user-based pricing when we implemented Browser. It was a
pretty stiff one-time charge, but will definitely pay for itself over
time.
That was my last upgrade charge!

That is true...It is called stick it to them as much as you can!

I have at least three small clients that need to upgrade but cannot
because
the the MAPICS' upgrade prices as well as the increased ALF amounts!
