Don,

I've actually run ltsp off of debian pretty successfully. One problem I've noticed is that debian is always behind the times (which is excellent in a business stability sense, but not so good in the innovation department). LTSP is one of those projects that I'd happily donate tons of money to; it's (imho) one of the more innovative methods of reusing older commodity hardware.

That being said, I usually stick to debian testing for servers and debian unstable for my desktop at home; I'm happy that linux is finally getting to the point where the desktop is within reach of the common user.

Peter,

this brings up a interesting point...that being the lack of
standardization of linux. It's fast become vendor centric in that if
your package is designed around a specific flavour of linux, then that's
what you're going to have to use...or you can run multiple servers with
multiple dialects and hope for the best....

I"m noticing this at my kid's school...we pulled all the M$ crap out of
the classroom with the exception of K and put ltsp in. Kids and staff
love it. But we've got Koha (library) that requires debian, ltsp that's
basically red hat....and I'm not going to bring in Suse to make me even
more schitzoid! And on top of that I still had to maintain a small M$
presence as the core school app runs on MS Server 2003.... OY!

Hello everyone!

I thought I'd put my two cents in as well. I'm not too guru-like on my
400 knowledge (still a relative admin newbie) but I've been using Linux
since '95 and I'd have to say that I'd prefer SuSE over Red Hat.

It's just always seemed to me that the SuSE people "had their stuff
together" whereas many redhat releases have always seemed cobbled
together at the last minute. Although I have a few friends that work
for RedHat, I do have to tip my head to the SuSE crew, since they've
always seemed to be the quiet innovators who deliver a solid distro.

If I had my choice, I'd run Debian on an LPAR, but as far as I know
there's no debian project yet for the '400.

I believe IBM's favorite is Suse. They use Suse as the base for the HMC
code. I get the impression from those in Rochester that it is the
preferred distro also.

But I disagree. My preference is RH as it seems the distro of choice
here in the US. I have 10 to 1 RH to Suse on the servers I work on.
Although if you think IBM's key management is bad, holy mackerel try RH.
