seems that the iSeries JDK file.io/IFS code behaves differently in terms
of locking than the Windows/sun JDK equivalent. It simply makes it a
pain to view log files. Perhaps there is a viewer that can both format
nicely and not lock. However, this makes it a pain for end
I use the EDTF ('/tmp/whatever.log') command on the AS/400 to view IFS
files. This works reasonably well.
In your scenario I would suggest using "vim" on the windows client,
which provides a right-click menu entry on the files for editing. It
handles most scenarios gracefully and knows about Unix line endings.
An alternative approach is using log4j with a wrapping-and-indenting
adapter which helps a lot when looking at spool files. I wrote one, it
is rather simple to adapt ConsoleAdapter for this purpose.
