Check out TextPad. I believe it opens for read-only and you can tell it to
wrap lines if you want for easier reading. I have been using it for about
seven years I think. Like Notepad on steroids :-)

Yes, I am mapping a drive. I can open the file with NotePad but lines of
log data wrap and it becomes nearly unreadable. When opening the log with
wordPad I get the locked file exception. I can copy the locked
file and open the copy with WORDPAD but that is not convenient. It
seems that the iSeries JDK file.io/IFS code behaves differently in terms of
locking than the Windows/sun JDK equivalent. It simply makes it a pain to
view log files. Perhaps there is a viewer that can both format nicely and
not lock. However, this makes it a pain for end user/customers to get some
special viewer.

As Walden indicated, notePad must open readOnly while WordPad opens for
write.
