It's all about platform options, cost and ease of deployment. There are a lot of customers we talk to who still don't have the iSeries horsepower to run Websphere.
From my understanding Websphere also costs money on most non-iSeries
platforms. We write cross platform software and wanted a single, no cost servlet engine to deploy across all platforms. The most accepted and versatile engine in my opinion is Apache Tomcat. Of course if you're already using Websphere, there's maybe no reason to jump to Tomcat. But for the rest of us who agree that Tomcat is a great servlet engine, give it a whirl and have fun. Tomcat 5.5.15 Installer for iSeries (richard@xxxxxxxxxxx) Good that Tomcat works on i-series. But, why would I use Tomcat when Websphere comes with i-series? Websphere web-container should do all that Tomcat does. Since Apache Tomcat is Open Source we have also decided to make our installer contribution open source by sharing our easy Tomcat install process with other iSeries professionals interested in writing cross platform applications with Java/JSP/Servlets/Etc. You now have no reason not to dive in and start checking out java for web programming. We've made it easy for you to install and deploy Apache Tomcat on V5R1 - V5R3. Just make sure you read our instructions and make sure you have the Java JDK 1.5 on your iSeries. Note: We have only tested on V5R3 so far. However V5R1 and V5R2 should work if the JDK 1.5 is available. Download Tomcat from the link listed below, install it and start having fun learning Java web programming for the iSeries.
