In that initial handshake, the two sides can then negotiate to the fastest possible rate (sort of like modems do, except they do it in reverse). If the machine are two iSeries boxes, for example, they could then communicate via simple binary data structures. XML is only the correct answer when the two computers have nothing in common. Joe
