That sounds like a lot of development overhead and complexity, instead of 
getting machines to negotiate on an agreeable data format, just get 
everything to talk XML.   Unless of course there is a compelling reason 
not to!

Any communication between two machines should have a very simple
two-stage communication.  The first level uses a standard XML type of
interaction.  In that initial handshake, the two sides can then
negotiate to the fastest possible rate (sort of like modems do, except
they do it in reverse).  If the machine are two iSeries boxes, for
example, they could then communicate via simple binary data structures.

XML is only the correct answer when the two computers have nothing in
common.
