No, it's not you, Mark! You're absolutely correct: VAJ does not work like any other IDE (with the possible exception of Smalltalk IDEs). VAJ is a repository-based IDE, which means it works from a different point of view than most tools. Primarily, it works from the class level, not the source level. Code is always compiled (unless there is an error). VAJ remembers and keeps track of all the dependencies from between classes, and in so doing makes for some very powerful features, both for entering new code and for modifying existing code. The biggest downside is that you have to get used to VAJ's way of doing things. But once you do, there are some really powerful capabilities. For instance, I can move a method from a subclass to a superclass with a simple menu option. I can copy a constructor from one class to another, and it will change the name automatically. I can generate setters and getters at any time. It's really powerful. I don't use any of the "Visual Programming" aspects of VAJ (the drag and drop programming stuff) because it's against my personal programming philosophy, but for straight up Java coding, debugging and deployment, no IDE matches VAJ.
