Java on AS/400 question -- JAVA400-L

Does JAVA run on the AS/400's CPU?  If so,  can JAVA directly access and
update files on the AS/400 or must JAVA call a HLL program to do the I-O on
the AS/400 files?

Can JAVA running on a PC access AS/400 files directly?  Or does it have to
call a HLL program on teh AS/400 to do the I-O?

I am new to all this and want to get an idea of what can and cannot be done
with JAVA and an AS/400.
