Michael.
I am going to try to answer some of this without mentioning vendor names to comply with what I believe are the list rules

IF you will be at US COMMON in San Antonio TX Oct 3 - 7, I will be presenting a session on Encapsulation - TITLED Year/2000: It's Not Too Late. There as here I cannot mention any prices publically.

My comments are below at lines marked ###

>> database ?

>Yes - several BPCS 3rd party vendors & consultants offer such things

### There are two note worthy Encapsulation vendors. Each has a different technique to implement the +/- 28 rollback.( I'll be willing to clarify that off line only)
>
>I notice your e-mail ends in "FR" ... is that France? ... If so, then you
>might want to check out a BPCS site in "French" that might be more meaningful
>to your co-workers

## At least one vendor has/is world wide, so I'm not sure that matters. except for understanding the language of this forum.

>My understanding of the process is as follows
>1. Everything in your data base is really -28 years, so today internally is
>Tuesday September 14, 1971 ... the BPCS software does not need to be touched
>because it is not close to Y2K dates.

## YES it internally operates in zoned time[28 years back] but communicates externally in current/real time dates.

>2. The interface with user screen & report adds 28 years back on so that what
>the users see is the real date ... when they key in today's date, 28 years
>gets subtracted before it goes to the data base ... so if you are using OTHER
>SOFTWARE off of the external file layouts, it also needs to get the 28 year
>adjustment

## Does the same for external programs EDI for example.

>> them) ?
>
>I believe hundreds of companies have already installed this solution &
>successfully tested it & some of them are even on BPCS_L

## Several hundred not only small but large & very large firms world wide have done this successfully. You can get to power test the system in about 10 days. Trim the depth & width of your testing effort too, if you must as time is clocking out.
>
>> 3) How many time to setup ?
>
>Well, if you believe the hype, and if you spend the big bucks to do it right,
>and if you did not leave it to the last minute, it supposedly can be
>implemented over a big weekend.

## That would be a very Long Week end
I recommend you get into the Remediation process NOW and not wait . While Encapsulation has a short cycle to testings door step, you cannot wait any longer as you will increase your risks and the management there of.

>If you believe the horror stories & think they are typical, that is another
>matter.
>
>My understanding is that these vendors are very experienced with the stuff,
>and your company can pay them to run your data through their tools & return
>the data to you with the right dates internally, and they can also work with
>your mods & the vanilla code to get the interface taken care of .... or you
>can buy the conversion code, and struggle to learn how to use it right & hope
>you get the conversion done yourself on the cheap, but in either case, there
>will need to be serious testing.

## Comparatively, the service is relatively cheap and is the entire process. PLUS you might start with these tools[ or use them later] for an Audit/inventory to discover possible deficiencies in your system today.
