In order to avoid HUGE problems, you should set up the client access to
predefined workstation names that are not longer than 8 characters (as BPCS
assigns a Q prefix) and under no circumstances should you allow the
workstation names to be dynamically assigned as the data area names are
only 8 long and a data area is assigned to each workstation. Therefore if
you use the standard "QPADEV0001" which has a different printer/jobq etc to
device "QPADEV0002" BPCS will truncate the device name, use the first 8
digits, prefix it with "Q" (why I don't know) and select the data area
accordingly. In order to assign unique workstation ID's go to your
session, click on the "Communication" menu option, select "Configure" and
type in a unique workstation ID. Incidentally there are other benefits to
have unique workstation ID's if you use meaningful naming conventions.

Subject: Workstation Data Areas

I am currently working on an implementation of BPCS 6.0.04. One of the many
problems that I have encountered is the use of work station names for
assigning printer / writer device name. Due to nature of our AS400 network
,
work station names are dynamically allocated. As a result the work station
names 'move' around different areas of our plant and consequently output
should be directed to different printer. I would rather not have to train
users to work with their spool files. Has anyone got a solution to this
problem.

Kind regards,
Gordon.
