Re: how to increase field size without increasing the field size

Have you tried communicating with the people you are trading with? For
example, if you are dealing with Company XYZ ask them how big the fields
get. If they say, "the EDI standards do allow for x characters for that
field but we're still running BPCS 405CD and don't plan on migrating in
the near future so we're still at only y characters" then what's the
hubbub?

I used to head up EDI here, and let me tell you, no one, at the time, was
ever a cause for concern. Granted, it's been years.

Mostly EDI goes to an intermediate file. Then your custom programs find a
way to feed it into your system. Your intermediate files could all be
made with max size (or appropriately variable length fields)
