You're right... I was confused.   Sorry about the misinformation.

However, I'd still use QCMDEXC (or the C system() function) instead of a
separate CL program.  I really do think the API call would be easier to
read.

Since Cobol supports data areas natively, however, the point is moot.  The
native Cobol support for data areas should be used instead.
