I'm doing this for other customers today. The DSL provider Rhythms supplied
a Netopia 3100 DSL router that connects a company LAN to the Internet and
uses both NAT and VPN. Aside from the fact that Rhythms went chap 11
yesterday (and my DSL provider Covad ditto last week) this is a good system.

NAT means that non-routable internal addesses like 192.168.x.x get "changed"
to a routeable address (that static IP assigned to the router) when traffic
goes out on the net. The router does all the work keeping track of stuff by
MAC address.

VPN gives a secure, encrypted tunnel through which you can do 5250 emulation
(Synapse) securely. Passwords are configured for MSCHAP meaning that they
also are encrypted. Encryption systems are PPTP (directly MS Win
compatible - free from MS) and L2TP (MS Win compatible with 3rd party
software).
