You hit on the whole issue. When a person has served faithfully for some years, is it right that their reward be to be laid off for younger & cheaper worker? When a company can cut their health care cost by 60% by keeping a young and never-sick staff, should they? Should a person be fired for being sick? Should a worker be fired on his 40th birthday?

Are you suggesting that the only changes were the replacement of 9 programmers? And that the result was a change from losses to profits?

May I add this? Sometimes a team gets fat, dumb and happy. Ford Motor is laying off 30,000 people and closing 10 plants. One of the reasons given is the abnormally high cost of an entrenched work force. Health care costs are becoming punitive unless a company has a young, never sick work force.
