I don't understand this. You certainly can't be talking about hardware or operating system as Websphere runs on Windows, Unix, and Linux as well as IBM i. It uses Java, so that is pretty neutral as well.

Jim,

Tim Rowe has some good points, but WebSphere locks you into the IBM platform. If you use Tomcat or JBOSS your are 100% flexible and platform neutral.

Do they get to choose what data format they'll use (soap, xml, json, etc?)
If so, the YAJL port would be sweet if it interfaced with ILE COBOL which it
most likely does... building JSON is a breeze.

The apache server already does all the job/thread control, no need to stack
things (although I do enjoy node.js.. just seems like they're just rewriting
everything that is already available.. thus a "stack"). I do so enjoy
node.js so far, though.

I think of node development as a "reverse onion". Instead of peeling back
layers, you add them as you go along in your development. Maybe one of
those balls that's made out of rubber bands... would be a better explanation
:) But it sure is fun!

WAS Express requires the IM installer to actually put updates into the
actual running server instances. For IWS and the IAS (liberty) servers
running on IBM i are all updated only though a simple PTF update. The

Quick question that I've never thought about since none of my
customers
currently use IWS outside of the automatic IBM supplied items. . We
know to
update the WAS Express 8.5 we run a program at the command line or in
the
*ADMIN server to apply the service pack after the PTFs are installed.

Does the IWS server get updated with just PTFs or is there an
additional
step there too?

Correction time. WebSphere is not a thing of the past, and on
IBM i
it
is
included with your operating system license. Now, I would not
necessarily use full blown WebSphere when starting out with Web
Services.
There are many other options that the IBM i programmer will find
easier
to consume then doing the heavy lifting them selfs.

The Integrated Web Services (IWS) support is part of the IBM i OS,
supported on 7,1 and higher. Allows for SOAP or REST based web
services.

support (

any supported release) This support leveraged the Liberty web

at JBOSS both are free open source servers. WebSphere is
