Tim,
Quick question that I've never thought about since none of my customers
currently use IWS outside of the automatic IBM supplied items. . We know to
update the WAS Express 8.5 we run a program at the command line or in the
*ADMIN server to apply the service pack after the PTFs are installed.
Does the IWS server get updated with just PTFs or is there an additional
step there too?

Correction time. WebSphere is not a thing of the past, and on IBM i it
is
included with your operating system license. Now, I would not
necessarily use full blown WebSphere when starting out with Web
Services.
There are many other options that the IBM i programmer will find easier
to consume then doing the heavy lifting them selfs.
The Integrated Web Services (IWS) support is part of the IBM i OS,
supported on 7,1 and higher. Allows for SOAP or REST based web services.

Get the latest DG1 PTF Group and you have the most current support ( on
any supported release) This support leveraged the Liberty web container
along with JAx-WS and JAX-RS. The Web Admin GUI interface gives the IBM
i
programmer a super easy way to create and host their Web Services.

Jim,
Spend some time at Apache.org and take a good look at Tomcat or go look
at JBOSS both are free open source servers. WebSphere is virtually a
thing of the past. It makes no sense to spend the money on WebSphere
today.
