I'm not sure what you mean by "Old" SEO but every bit of SEO is important.
Even metatags carry some weight, although not the weight they once did.
Leaving out any bit of optimization can lead to lower rankings in the
results.

Ultimately it comes down to content. Your site should have info. that is a
destination. This will build up the number of back links (inbound) to your
site that will help with the Google PageRank.
NOTE- PageRank is not a number. It is named after one of the Google
founders, Larry Page.

I'll agree OLD SEO is probably gone or dying. With "web2.0" and dynamic
sites things have changed. You don't want to make SEO your primary focus,
IMHO, but you have to consider it. You want a consumer to be able to enter
in an item number and your site pops up. If you don't have any SEO in
place,
that just won't happen. Here is a good starting point for an overview,
http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=70897&hl=en

Keep in mind too Google is in the search engine world, they don't have to
make their stuff SEO friendly. For example GWT generates JavaScript from
Java code. They wrote this for internal usage and I think mainly AdWords
which doesn't have to be SEO friendly as it's a tool.

So, from a "tools" stand point SEO isn't needed. From a consumer based site
SEO is a must. Look at Amazon without SEO they would likely not be the
first
results when searching for products. They use, it appears, URL rewriting to
help with that.

The idea is that Google is so good that will find it if your site is
easy to navigate and you are resonably linked to. Now that may not
help with the other search engines. The point these guys seem to be
making is not to spend money on SEO, spend it on marketing and social
media. SEO can only do so much. What point is there to SEO if no one
links to or talks about you website? Basic SEO sill needs to be done
(like descriptive URLs) but META tags and some other practices are
slowly going away.

The main site I have been hearing this from is the podcast Marketing
Over Coffee with Christopher Penn (and I forgot the other guy). I have
also heard this on This Week in Google quite a bit and possibly a
couple other sites I follow.
