I'll agree OLD SEO is probably gone or dying. With "web2.0" and dynamic
sites things have changed. You don't want to make SEO your primary focus,
IMHO, but you have to consider it. You want a consumer to be able to enter
in an item number and your site pops up. If you don't have any SEO in place,
that just won't happen. Here is a good starting point for an overview,

Keep in mind too Google is in the search engine world, they don't have to
make their stuff SEO friendly. For example GWT generates JavaScript from
Java code. They wrote this for internal usage and I think mainly AdWords
which doesn't have to be SEO friendly as it's a tool.

So, from a "tools" stand point SEO isn't needed. From a consumer based site
SEO is a must. Look at Amazon without SEO they would likely not be the first
results when searching for products. They use, it appears, URL rewriting to
help with that.

couple other sites I follow.
