I tried to load some JavaFX apps onto my machine (per John) only to find
out that the Linux desktop isn't yet supported - bummer.

Java is open source (although JFX is not for the moment but Sun is committed to open source) and is an inherently platform independent technology. Specifically when compared with Flash or Silverlight. JavaFX is on version 1.0 now so don't judge to soon. Flash exists for many years now and there is still not a decent working flash plug-in for Linux. For JFX, this is simply a matter of time.

If JavaFX is easier to code (i.e. simpler syntax) it makes me wonder if it
will also be used on the server side to replace Java business logic and
the like? Competitor of EGL maybe?

JFX is meant to be used to create the user interface, or the presentation layer. Use Java (or another JVM language) to implement the business logic. These classes can be simply accessed through JFX.

I just got done with my morning break on the throne and found a good

Niels, if you research it more please do respond back and let us know what
you find.

Hi John.

I had never heard about JavaFX - but after browsing around, download it to
my NetBeans .. must say .. I'm in love :)

The language is a crossover between java and javascript. Fx is a dynamic
language where you access java classes and define object just like in
javascript. Very slick way of inherence and the way to expose methods as
properties with a simple "bind" keyword - is just brilliant.

JavaFX is actually another good argument for making the 5250 javascript
proxy - JavaFX will just swallow the JSON stream I am talking about....
