How often have you wondered how the program got to a particular error
point? Does the joblog actually help? I'd guess not.
Maybe we are just dealing with different debugging approaches, but yes, I
use the joblog ALL the time for errors. You can go in and learn exactly
what line of code threw the error. You can also learn when the job entered
the subsystem among other helpful info when debugging an error. I would say
you are missing out on a very nice feature of i5OS for debugging purposes,
though it sounds like you run mostly pre-packaged software on your i5OS??
where I am doing a lot of custom development.
Add to that the increased usage of java on i5OS and that too doesn't
support the joblog, so now you're even farther away from the joblog being
useful. Think you're likely to get anything useful out of the joblog for a
failed web request against Websphere running on i5OS?
I think Java/Websphere usage on the i5OS is still considerably small
compared to things running natively (i.e. not in a JVM). I don't use
Websphere on i5OS but do use Tomcat and would agree that I don't dwell in
the i5OS joblogs to learn of errors for JSP pages but instead in the .log
files. On the other side, with a failed request for RPG CGI I get great job
logs and spl files (i.e. WRKSPLF QTMHHTTP).
I'll grant that the joblog concept is very useful, the work management is
great on i5OS, no argument there.
I'll guess it is safe to chalk this one up as a inferiority for Windows and
a solid feature (outside of Websphere) for i5OS - correct? I don't think we
could call Windows inferior based on this one feature, though it is a big
lacking in the Windows environment IMO.

Windows can show me all of the processes running, but as far as I can
tell I can't get a solid job log.
You're correct. There's no concept of a "joblog" on windows (or any other
platform I believe)
However, the joblog is only as good as the messages written into it. In the
past i5OS programs have been very flat. That is, there were the lines of
code you wrote, and then the operating system, and that's it.
The RPG programmer may have been good (usually not) at logging message, but
Rochester was very good. However, as time as progressed and we've layered
calls upon calls upon service program, upon imports, etc. Many of our
programs are now a long way away from the underlying operating system. And
most of the time that path does not write any entries into the joblog. How
often have you wondered how the program got to a particular error point?

web request against Websphere running on i5OS? Think again.
I'll grant that the joblog concept is very useful, the work management is
great on i5OS, no argument there. But as systems evolve it's becoming less
and less useful.
