Ken,

When you saved your preferences for new workspaces, it does have the "Categorize named indicators as Fields in the outline view" un-checked correct?

Working with a new workspace and using the default setting or saved settings with this turned on will cause the parser issues. I've made sure to save my preferences with this un-checked so my new workspaces have that turned off. And when I go into older ones I check just to be sure.

The "Categorize named indicators as Fields in the outline view" was an odd duck in that if the main source had a named indicator, the parse was fine. It was only a problem when the only "named indicators" were in a /copy or /include. The size of the main was small, but the includes cascaded from 160 to over 1k files with Compiler directives.

The visual queue was the Outline had Indicators twice. In this case it caused an outline anomaly AND a heap issue. So if it happens again, a screen shot of your outline expanded could be invaluable. Our fix for the next release guards the Heap issue. Because we agree that a parse error shouldn't lock up RDi.

And Ken, we do appreciate your passion!

Steve,

Uploaded zipped workspace into my pmr!

Sort of short summary of what happen to the best of my recollection that caused some of my problems.

1.) Debugged my program.
2.) Accidently stepped into my service Program with Compiler Directives
3.) Stepped out of the service program.
4.) Ended debug.
5.) started debug again, and found my error.
6.) Open split view: Ctrl+2 to update single line of bad code.
7.) ended debug.
8.) Then unable to type, resize or close members.
9.) Notice parsing message stuck at 0% on the service program.

Others have mentioned that I should just close the member, instead of doing a complete restart. But, I was unable to close, move, or resize ANY views at all. The main menu did allow me to do another "RESTART-TO-WORK" option however. <sigh> And I ran into this issue about 3-times.

Snicker deprivation kicked in, and I went on my UNPROFESSIONAL tirade. <Bad Ken> Bad timing with a whole bunch of issues going on... <sorry>

Sadly, this is not really a new issue. I have had debugging issues and editing in previous releases of RDI. I normally attributed to me maybe fat-fingering something. Previously, years ago, I got the milky-white screen. Luckily, I haven't got that issue in a LONG TIME. <Joy Joy>

Oh well, that is "general scenario" of what I "sort of" remember doing yesterday. Hopefully, this general scenario might be slightly helpful.

RDI 9.6.0.4 is working WONDERFULLY for me today with the Live-parsing turned off! So, I am pretty sure it is some sort of "parsing issue". My assumption.

Hi Ken,

Please do send your workspace with your PMR.

Your issue may be related to the APAR opened below:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?crawler=1&uid=swg1SE69773

We do appreciate your willingness to help us find this issue so we can correct it.

Thanks!

Steve,

Thanks! But, I always turn on the heap to see that. My screen did not go MILKY-WHITE or show any other signs of high heap. But, I forgot to check the heap, because it just locked up! no signs of high usage. I really need a "Monitor Camera". <smirk>

As usual, it happen at the WORST possible time, I was just trying to get my work done. <rant>

Oh well, I have turned off the parser, and RDI 9.6.0.4 works EXCELLENT without that bug-laden feature called "parser"!!! <Joy Joy> No code assist, but better than locking up! <Big Smile>

Program was small, only about 778 lines of code!

If it would help, I could zip up my Home-Desk-top work-space and attach it to my PMR. But, don't know if that would be helpful or not. <puzzled-look>

PS. I was debugging my program fix, and it step into a service program with a lot of compiler directors, and I did a "step-out". I stopped debug, and tried to continue on. But, I notice the parser message saying trying to "parse..." and it was ZERO! Ouch! I was trying to do a split screen to edit code, and everything stop! Unable to re-size view. Close view, or edit code!

Hi Ken,

When the Heap becomes too high RDi will slow down or become un-responsive. I'd suggest turning on the heap status monitor by going into the menu Window > Preferences > General and select the Show Heap Status. Your heap memory will display on the status bar.

I'd suggest closing the editor tabs before you reach max heap size. Closing the editor(s) will free memory that the java garbage collector isn't able to. To close all open editors you can right click on a tab and select Close All. There are other handy options like close others if you want to keep one in place.

The Thread Death is how the Live Parse is cancelled and is not the cause of your slowdown. If you notice any anomalies in the outline view (duplicate labels or unexpected branches), it may help diagnosis the root cause. Also, if you notice each time you do "X" the heap climbs and doesn't clean up, please provide that information to IBM support so they can add it to your PMR.

Hi,

Using Junk-ware called RDI 9.6.0.4 with blasted parsers errors and LOCKING up! <Sad>

CANNOT CLOSE member, nor resize members? <Sad>

Luckily, SEU does NOT LOCK UP! EVER! That is ENTERPRISE Stable Software!<Joy Joy>

How in the world do I show that I cannot close "views" or "resize"? This on my Desktop with 8-cores 3.7 GHZ. So it is not a lack of HORSE-POWER. nor lack of memory, no hard-disk speed. SSD 500Gig!

What in the heck is a Java Death Thread?

If IBM cannot fix the parser, they NEED TO REMOVE IT! yet, I was told it was okay to turn it back on. Off it goes. I much rather have an editor that does NOT LOCK, than have fancy "Code-Assist". That is WORTHLESS if it locks up the editor! Junk ware!

When does the next "so called" fix-pack come out?

PS. I need a WHOLE bag of SNICKERS! <Sad> I was forced to kill RDI-Junkware TWICE. <Sad> Fell-back to RELIABLE SEU. That NEVER FAILS! <sad>
