Or is it just a matter of SPACEx vs SKIPx?

When you change from absolute to relative, do the fields defined with
line#
reorder and get a SPACEx?


SPACEx at the record format level makes it a relative-positioned
record format. You would have to change the fields in the record format
separately in order to remove absolute positioning of a field. This can
also be done in the Properties view. Reordering is a manual (drag-n-drop)
process. Note that part of a record format can be absolutely positioned
while another part of the same record format is relatively positioned --
or vice versa.
