The F6 display can be conditioned - but it is a preview mode - it has no impact in the design screen if I recall. Of course I haven't used SDA in about 12+ years - ever since Code/400 designer came along in fact so I may be dismembering.

As to "nudging" I agree - I've always thought that would be a useful feature.

Hi Vernon,

I'm not logged on at the moment but I think from memory in SDA it was
F6=Condition Display to set Indicators on and Off.

To be honest, like I said I don't really think it's a problem I'm sure
there are more important and useful things to work on, I just wanted to
make sure I wasn't missing something obvious.

Like Jon says, you can temporarily move the field around easily enough if
you need to, or another common solution is to have an output field and
change it's text rather than two literal fields based on an indicator. Have
a little routine to auto centre the text in the field.

Another thing I did wonder - once you've selected a field in the Design
View, is there a way to nudge it around with keys?
If I'm only moving a field around a short distance I seem to prefer not to
use the mouse so I end up clicking in the properties box to change the row
and col.
I keep thinking it would be nice if something like alt+up would nudge it up
one position, alt-left would nudge it left etc.

Again - just asking :-) It's not a complaint!

Craig

Yeah, I've done the same, and it is really easy now to drag things around,
unlike in SDA.

Yes - I see what you mean. When I have had that requirement in the past
I have typically just dragged the overlapping field out of the way, done
the alignment and then put it back.

I do so little green-screen these days that it is not really a big thing
for me - but it may be for others. Why not open an RFE requesting it?

So,

The design perspective has some functionality which allows you to centre
a
field, like you might do in SDA by er typing AC over the attribute byte I
think.

It relies on you being able to access the component to right click it to
get to the context menu.

You can't do that easily if two fields occupy the same space dependant on
an indicator.

I'm not saying it's a problem I was just asking if there was something I
was missing that would allow me cause one of the fields to not be there.
Some of these complicated GUIs have features which aren't intuitive and I
just wanted to check I hadn't overlooked it.

The big advantage of RDi over SDA is that RDi can use named sets of
indicators to control the screen in preview mode. It can also use named
sets of records. These two features alone make it way better than SDA
in my
opinion which was always a real PITA to test screens with.

Since moving from design to preview is a simple matter of clicking on a
tab I really don't see why I would want the added complexity of fields
"disappearing" on me during the design process because I forgot to turn
off/on an indicator.

This doesn't seem like too much of a problem - we never set indicators

in the design part of SDA, only on the fly when testing a screen -
STRSDA
option 3.

So this seems to line up with how it was in practice with SDA - I know,

I also have thought I should be able to set indicators on the design or
properties area - but indicator values are not properties of any field -
the __testing__ of the indicators is a property, not the value itself.

Am I missing something? Hope not, but always possible.

AM:

Is there a way in Design Perspective to turn indicators on and off or

is

that only available via the Preview Tab?

Currently only available in the Preview tab.

Sincerely,

Dave Clark
