Good one Buck! You almost made me spit out my coffee laughing. (...don't recall 'professional'...)

PS. Makes me wonder how the Microsoft Developers deal without Punch-Card Date column. They actually use source comparison tools. What a "strange concept". <smirk>

Sadly, No comparison tool can compare Punch-card format and Free-format. Every line turns up as CHANGED because of the Punch-Card column 6 for the spec type.

For a "First Pass" the Code formatter of RDI is not bad. Just too bad it changes all the dates. Which is why I don't use it.

A professional tool like Help-system: RPG Toolbox does NOT change the source dates.

In years past, I wrote a tool that would update RPG source code to rename file and record format names in bulk, across all members in a source file. I thought it was more efficient than making someone go in one by one and doing the replacements by hand. I made one mistake: I didn't update the SRCDAT column.

When I did I/O against each source member, IBM i updated the Last Changed date. So everyone knew that a bunch of source members had been changed (PDM F14/F15). The problem came when programmers tried in vain to find /what/ lines had been changed, and couldn't see any, leading them to the conclusion that hundreds of programs had newly deleted lines.

I might have been called a few names that week, but I don't recall 'professional' being among them :-)
