There is a button on the upper left to select the kind of compare that is
being done.. I assume this is the result of selecting 2 source members in
RSE, right-clicking, and taking the "Compare With--> Each Other" option, is
that right?
One of the options is "Text compare" - the other is "IBM i member compare".
There is a different compare tool - the one that is like the CODE/400
compare, with the red and yellow highlighting. Have you tried that, and
does it have the same problem. It has a button on the toolbar that has the
Greek delta character in it - or go to the Edit menu and click on "Compare
to file". This one has a couple oddities to it, as well, but I'm not sure
about this issue.
"Text compare" is, I believe, an Eclipse thing, mostly, with some
intelligence to ignore date and sequence number. I could be wrong there,
though, quite easily.

It is something that happens when a large block of code is--
changed/inserted/deleted from source A, and another block of code is
changed/inserted/deleted in the same vicinity in source B. When you
compare
the two, the text compare gets confused. I find that this happens most
frequently with service programs where you have one module per service
program, and multiple projects/developers active on that service program
at
a time. As an aside, this is one reason I prefer multiple modules per
service program, but that is another discussion. When I compare the
production source for service program A that has procedures 1, 2, 4, 6, 7,
and 8 with my source that has procedures 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8 in it,
the text compare gives me a difference that starts after procedure 2, and
includes 6, and maybe 7, and 8. It would be nice to see a compare that
knows that procedures 6, 7, and 8 are in both sources, that 3 and 5 are
missing from the production source, and that procedure 4 is missing from
my
source.

I agree, but I've worked at places where being able to create a library of
any sort is a big "no no!" so improving the standard tool is always a
good
thing. Maybe one day IBM will do an Apple and buy iSphere putting Frank
and
Thomas on easy street and incorporating iSphere into RDi, but until then
the RFE system is all we have.

I don't have that loaded here as I don't have the authority to install
software on my machine.

I have submitted a new RFE to make Source Compare more accurate. This is the Rational Developer for IBM i / Websphere Development Studio

The problem is most pervasive in my service program modules when the
left side has some extra procedures and some missing procedures.
This confuses the current text compare. A little language specific
intelligence like understanding procedures and subroutines in RPG
would go a long way to improving the situation.
