It is something that happens when a large block of code is
changed/inserted/deleted from source A, and another block of code is
changed/inserted/deleted in the same vicinity in source B. When you compare
the two, the text compare gets confused. I find that this happens most
frequently with service programs where you have one module per service
program, and multiple projects/developers active on that service program at
a time. As an aside, this is one reason I prefer multiple modules per
service program, but that is another discussion. When I compare the
production source for service program A that has procedures 1, 2, 4, 6, 7,
and 8 with my source that has procedures 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8 in it,
the text compare gives me a difference that starts after procedure 2, and
includes 6, and maybe 7, and 8. It would be nice to see a compare that
knows that procedures 6, 7, and 8 are in both sources, that 3 and 5 are
missing from the production source, and that procedure 4 is missing from my
source.

I agree, but I've worked at places where being able to create a library of
any sort is a big "no no!" so improving the standard tool is always a good
thing. Maybe one day IBM will do an Apple and buy iSphere putting Frank and
Thomas on easy street and incorporating iSphere into RDi, but until then
the RFE system is all we have.

I don't have that loaded here as I don't have the authority to install
software on my machine.

Just wondering: Do you see the same difficulties when using the

----I have submitted a new RFE to make Source Compare more accurate.--
Here it
is:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?
use_case=viewRfe&CR_ID=111775
The problem is most pervasive in my service program modules when the
left side has some extra procedures and some missing procedures.
This confuses the current text compare. A little language specific
intelligence like understanding procedures and subroutines in RPG
would go a long way to improving the situation.
