I have my own personal (purchased) copy of RDi. I use a timeshare service for IBM i access, so no server-based licence. It took some patience and perseverance to get my IBM Id hooked up to my Customer Number and authenticated so's I could submit a PMR under my "entitlement". (I have to be "entitled" to submit bug reports?!) No other PC software that I've used behaves in this manner; most will "phone home" automatically to report issues.

It should be so much simpler. NOTE: Big Respect for all the Rational folk; it is the larger IBM behemoth that forces this process upon us. (The Rational team are magnificent and do a great job. Their willingness to engage and respond through unofficial media such as Midrange.Com is remarkable and much appreciated!)

Final Whinge, (which Edmund has heard before). Pricing. THE major obstacle I hear from clients, (particularly smaller shops) affecting wider adoption remains the cost of the product. Despite all of the arguments of discounts, trade-ups, productivity benefits, etc., etc. - the Price is NOT Right for many. It is PC software, based on a free, open source base (Eclipse). In my case, RDi was 7x more expensive to acquire than the operating system it runs under! Then there's the annual SW Maintenance fee, also more expensive than the one-off purchase of Windows 10 O/S.

Despite everything, I wouldn't be without RDi.

that all problems are solvable. But not until one sees that there is a
problem.

In my opinion, step 0 is to recognise that RDi is PC software, not
server software. Follow a licencing and support model like the rest of
the PC universe does.

But assume for the moment that the ship won't change course, and we're
all going to have to live with the licencing model we've got. Why not
put a 'Report This Bug!" button inside of RDi? The software could
verify immediately if you're on the current patch level (please upgrade)
and if you have a valid licence. Once verified, you could have it
record the screen / keystrokes while reproducing the problem, send the
lot off to Support and let the process flow. Copy the workspace, list
the environment variables, the OS version, you name it - it can be
captured by RDi itself. Heck, glue on some klunky annotation
capabilities like Jing has, and the programmer having the issue could
highlight her screen to help the debugging team.
