I looked at the link you provided - VE is not available in Data Studio for IBM i -- I remember looking at Data Studio a while back, saw a webcast on it - it just doesn't know what to do with DB2 for i. The stored procedure support does not handle external SPs, so far as I remember.

All in all, the Navigator tooling is the way to go for now, so far as I can see. I'd love to have Data Studio working. I did comment to the presenters that IBM i support was very weak. I think there is a bit of support missing for IBM z, too.

I'm open to being wrong on this - I certainly hope so!

Hi guys,
The visual explain technology is in the Data Studio product which is also
included in the RDp product. There is an improved version in the Optim
Development Studio, but the base free support will still meet the goals of
finding out how expensive your SQL statement is and why.
Simply go to the Database Development perspective and you will see the
Execution Plan view
See the document below for some instructions
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idm/v2r2/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.datatools.visualexplain.data.doc/topics/tvetop.html

I haven't tried this yet myself, so I hope this works for you.
More of Data Studio was included in RDp 8.0 because the AIX COBOL tooling
is taking advantage of it.
The Optim Development Studio has excellent tooling for tuning SQL queries
but it will cost an additional license. Right now, the Optim tooling is
based on an earlier version of Eclipse so it does not shell share with RDp.
We hope to get better integration with Optim once this hurdle is solved.

Ah - THAT I do agree with. The Visual Explain and SQL statement
processor of Navigator is really fine, and there's nothing for Eclipse
that can come close.

Absolutely not.

I rely on Visual Explain to help me get the best performance out of
the SQL we have in our products. I'm glad we DON'T have DBAs - it
lets me get to the bottom of things faster.
That's fine ... you use the right tool for the job.

IMO: Putting a database performance analysis tool in a IDE is putting it
in the wrong place.
