Of that time, more than 95% is the outputing of the HTML via CGI/RPG.
Then with respect you must have some inefficient coding techniques in
place to build the HTML. My best guess would be that you are
building strings into a conventional character variable when you
should be using Varying. That alone can result in a 10,000 to 1
performance boost where large strings are involved.
I use CGIDEV2's template system - I don't like reinventing the
wheel. CoralTree Systems Renaissance (http://
www.renaissanceframework.com/) builds an entire full blown framework
on top of this and still manages sub-second response time. Check it
out.
By all means check out any and all other options for your web apps -
I use both Java and PHP (and soon EGL Joe!) as well as RPG CGI and I
repeat that I have never seen performance problems of the type you
describe. Check out the demos at Renaissance or at the Easy400 web
site (
http://www.easy400.net) - I'd be very surprised if you can make
any of them run as slowly as you seem to experience.
