Yes but when I buy visual studio, I expect to be able to develop and
create my programs to run on that XP box. not here's the program
development, and you want to actually create those programs, That is this
part you need to buy it too.
I get Joe's point that the cost should be the same or less for small shop,
based on what parts you choose , we only have 7 developers here, and if
SEU will also cost per seat that makes the per seat for WDSC less of a
problem to fight for.
I do think it's interesting how the screen designer previewed on a per
seat version of WDSC, and now to get the next version of the designer, we
still have to pay per seat. hopefully less than the WDSc AE per seat cost.
I guess rational heard us when we complained about that beta, They showed
us. You want it on the standard version of our tool? OK, pay per seat for
it too.

Re: [WDSCI-L] IBM Rational Developer for System i V7.1

When compared with the costs of having other several development
environments WDSC is better positioned as a single development tool that
does it all. Is it possible that we have become used to bundled pricing
and
fearful of asking for better tools that come with a cost?

We need to start treating the iSeries as a server box. Hardware, software,
business applications and development tools are all separate components.
Its strength lies in its stability and uptime. I don't see XP boxes
pre-loaded with all the various packages of Visual Studio, so why should
the iSeries be any different. If the business is not willing to pay the
cost then the business needs to decide if the iSeries is really for them.

Same here. I have been pushing for adoption since V5 and it's been an
uphill battle the whole way. Yesterday I got a couple more developers
to install V7. This will probably kill it in our shop though.

More discouraging to me was the statement of direction section. If I
read it correctly WDSC 7.0 will no longer be enhanced. It is considered
a 'stabilized' product. To get any of the new features added to the
development tools we have to purchase the IBM Rational Developer for
System i product. Think screen designer and graphical program analyzer
not to mention EGL and other web tools. I have also been actively
promoting WDSC as a platform for beginning web development for some of
our applications. It will be a pretty tough sell now.

I guess WDSC7.0.0.4 is the last I will use. I can barely get my boss to
try WDSC, and was just getting a few more programmers involved. Adding a
per seat cost will kill it here, Guess I need to get my SEU skills up to
date again. : (

I knew better than to expect anything to be included in system cost with
IBM, or should I say the Rational group. First EGL and now WDSC, are
they really trying to kill their own products, or do they just have no
clue about System i customers.
