Actually, I disagree with David about the usefulness of SCM in a one or two person shop.

My first experience with SCM was in basically a one man shop.

Sure, all of us should be able to do things the right way without one, but in a one man shop the only
person enforcing the rules is you. And when you're in a hurry, well.... <grin>

The key thing is make sure you have a SCM tool that's easy to use so you don't get tempted to go
around it sometimes. A good SCM should make life easier, even if you're in a one man shop.

I must admit that I was working on third party provided source, and just home grown. So that might be
part of the reason I found SCM so helpful. But it seems to me that the small shops without it usually
have spent time writing their own SCM routines. We were brand new to the 400, so we didn't have any
of that. Rather than spend time writing it myself, it was more cost effective and quicker to spend
the 10K.

Honestly, I'd think long and hard about taking a job in a shop without a SCM package or plans to buy
one.

No doubt ... but, since I never really used a SCM system before I
started working for MKS, I personally can see where a good control
system will benefit even modest sized shops. One & two person shops
aren't going to get a whole lot of benefit ... but once you start
getting a team of any size, you'll probably find the controls that a
good SCM system provides can be invaluable.
