I run V6 on a 768Mb Centrino 1.6Ghz without seeing anything of that kind of
problem.  Much less memory and significantly less power than you have.  Do
you perhaps have some anti-virus thing running and dynamically checking
every jar file you touch or something?  Reason I ask is that we found that
machines that installed the entire product in less than an hour would take
up to 24 hours to install if Norton or MacAfee were running and weren't told
to ignore jar files.
