Disheartening to know this is still an issue. I upgraded to 6.0 to minimize this kind of thing. Granted, a fairly unusual set of circumstances led to the lost source but SEU could recover from this.
I *really* like using the same basic IDE for all my development but, man, three hours work is three hours work. A pretty expensive lesson....I have taken the same course and learned well.

primary reason I don't use WDSC to edit iSeries source.

I *DO* use WDSC to edit Java source ... and I don't encounter this kind
of problem because I have to save in order to compile.

Regardless ... a good rule of thumb ... click the save button every 5
lines of code.
