The standard system documentation on subcontracting has a lot to be
desired. I had to go through several pieces of information to put together
a procedure for setting up and processing subcontractors, bills of
material, etc. I just helped a company set up subcontracting. It is
similar to your scenario. They blank and form metal, then send it to a
subcontractor for coating. It is returned to be included in an upper level
assembly. I experienced a lot of problems not in the set-up and processing
phase (this worked fine) but in the various inquiries. It seems as though
the person who wrote the code for subcontracting quit in the middle of the
day and went home never to return. This company was on v3.5.2b with
service pack 2. Later versions may have cleared up some of the problems.
If you like, I can send you some documentation I pulled together. E-mail
me directly please.
