John, maybe it's semantics, but I wouldn't put this in the category of
"straight forward". I consider this very difficult when you take into
account the care that must be taken to insure that everything is handled
properly and the huge number of files and fields involved (don't forget all
the audit files).

Gary, I doubt this will satisfy your need, but have you considered leaving
the existing item#s alone and using the alternative item reference option
(F17 in item maintenance)to specify how you want to reference the item#.

If I ever designed an ERP system from scratch, I would definitely consider
using system generated internal numbers for items and customers and have
maintainable fields for how they would be shown to users. We've received
plenty of user requests over the years to change customer and item#s and
actually wrote programs to do this in our previous custom systems. The
second thing is a solid way of handling one item in different units of
measure rather than setting up different item#s. What a pain!

Gary,

Yes it is possible. It is relatively straight forward, although a pain.
Someone is going to have to go through and identify all of the database
files and fields that need to be changed. Additionally, you will need to
remember keep in mind those files where the item number may exist in more
than one field (which I believe happens in Manufacturing, but I am not sure
where else). You will also need to take into account any data that has been
extracted to other platforms for reporting purposes, especially if it is
being kept on those platforms for historical reasons. The program itself
will not be complicated.

Good Luck.

Subject: Changing Product Numbers

We are in the unfortunate situation where we need to change the structure of
our
product numbers.

Quite simply our current structure is nnnn-nn where the first four digits
are
the product code and the last two digits are the pack size, e.g. 4500-25

The problem that we have is that we have run out of product codes and so we
wish
to change our structure to nnnnn-nn (adding an extra digit), to maintain
consistency across product numbers we want to change our existing product
numbers to have an extra zero at the end, so my example product above would
become 45000-25.

We of course want to retain our product history and so all history records
will
need to be changed to reflect the new code as well as changing the product
file.

Question: Is this possible, has someone written a bespoke program to do
this.

Thanks in advance.
Gary.
