I think that this general store of development tools on the IBM i is
complete nonsense. Everyone as he wants and likes. You can think what you
like about MS, but it doesn't have that. I remember Synon as a deterrent
example. And to demand runtimes just so that you can display a GUI is a
cheek towards customers. In addition, who is supposed to maintain all this,
where are the skills, because the broad knowledge is not given by many
individual solutions for the platform. Piecework. Once again, it is IBM's
job to set the direction here, as the producer of the hardware as well as
the software. Only this provides future security for customers and
developers.
Just my 2cts in 2025 (Happy New Year!)

there is nothing stopping you to have a stateful connection with a web
client. Just use WebSocket as a transportation layer and build your own
protocol on top of it. And you can still use any web framework you want for
the presentation layer.
Well - that might not stop you and maybe me - but developing such a protocol
and anything around that, might stop 99% of all IBM i developers.
We never wrote 5250 data stream manually - we relied on DSPF and the OS to
handle that for us.
I mean - if there would be just one obvious and lightweight solution, it
would be adopted be a lot of developers.
